One’s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things.
–Henry Miller, Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch (1957)
A changing perspective.
Maybe that is the mark of moving closer to whatever we think we desire to be. Or are destined to be, as Miller states above. Change is, after, the hallmark of being human, of being part of this earthly plane.
Everything changes constantly as we move through life. Our perspective should then shift with each change that comes into our lives. And with each shift in perspective, with each new instance of seeing life from a new viewpoint, we are forever changed.
We are then not completely the same people we once were. That’s a scary proposition for some folks. We often try to hold on to what we once were. It’s comfortable. Being the same person in the same place seeing things from the same perspective, holding on to the same beliefs or biases, takes little effort or thought.
Staying that same person in that same place is, of course, unrealistic. Maybe impossible though I am sure there some out there whose perspective has changed little.
I somewhat pity those who deny and defy change, who stay the same. If I were to run into someone who knew me many years ago and they told me that I was exactly the same as I was back then, I would begin to question their perspective or my own identity since the person they knew then is someone I might not even recognize today.
Where’s this going? I don’t have a catchy line to end this and I am not sure what I am trying to say. I wasted far too much time this morning dawdling before beginning to write. This is a hurried bunch of words and mismatched thoughts, the result of another night of fractured sleep. It might not make sense or feel complete in any way.
That’s okay. I guess the gist of this is that we must accept and embrace the changes that occur. Revel in the new perspectives we now possess since they bring us closer to whatever destiny awaits us.
That sounds almost good, doesn’t it? If not, sorry to have wasted a few minutes of your day. Let me make up for that with a song. Here’s a favorite, Changes, from David Bowie. I probably have shared this song in the past. I just hope it wasn’t last week. My memory for those sorts of things is kind of spotty. One of those changing things.
Time may change me but I can’t trace time…
