Too busy this morning but I can always find a few minutes to take in some work from Georges Rouault (1871-1958). His work has for me a real sense of rightness, a certitude that makes even his roughest brushstrokes seem both perfectly placed and necessary.

When I went to the Carnegie museum in Pittsburgh, his “The Old King” stopped me dead in my tracks. I just looked it up, to make sure I’d remembered the title correctly, and see that he considered it a work-in-progress for twenty years. The little booklet I read, mentioned that he worked restoring stained glass windows for a time, and experimented with ceramics, and for me, those influences are probably part of the appeal in some of his paintings.
Yes, you can definitely see the influence of stained glass in his work.
