I’m looking for a little help.
This is a small painting that I’ve completed for my upcoming June show, at the Principle Gallery in Alexandria,VA. It is my tenth solo show there and I wanted to do a few different things for this show. This is one.
I’m looking for suggestions on names for this piece from anyone out there. You can simply submit a title as a comment or if you’re a little shy about such things, e-mail it to info@gcmyers.com .
All submissions will be listed on the back of this piece so that all titles will, in a way, live on, so long as the painting exists. I will select a title from those sent in to be the official title of this painting. I will send the person who sends in the title I select a small gift. I won’t disclose what that may or may not be . Let me just say that it will be appropriate for the winning effort.
Let’s see, we’ll end this thing on April 30.
So, be creative and give it a shot. At the very worst, your title will live on on the back of a piece of art. Or maybe you’ll come away with a prize. So, please send me a title or this will look pretty embarrassing.
Like your work! The name that popped into my head is Multiple Layers. Good luck with the opening.
Thanks, Brenda! Your title is first on the list!
[…] a framed portrait in a dark art gallery. It features the directorial debut of Steven Spielberg Name This Painting! – redtreetimes.wordpress.com 04/22/2009 I’m looking for a little help. This is a small painting […]
So, I’ll give my explanation first . . .
My favorite part of this painting is the brightness in the tree, so I wanted to include that in my title. And I was always removing rocks from our garden as a child, so I would say it’s probably a challenge for that tree to thrive with so many obstructions in the soil.
My name for this painting: Brilliant Determination
Hi, Mary- Thanks for the title and especially for the explanation- I really liked that. It also fits pretty well with the way I title my work normally.
You’re in the running!
All my best…
What a great piece – congratulations!
Here are my two suggestions for the title:
MEMORY
or
REMEMBRANCE
With best wishes for your upcoming show,
Alicja
Thanks, Alicja– I like the titles. It’s interesting to see what people see in a particular piece…
All my best…
I really enjoy your site. Iwas thinking about a title for your picture and this came to mind.
“Rooted in Terra Firma” some how seems to fit.
As always it is a pleasure to read your posts.

Thanks, A.J.- “Rooted in Terra Firma” is on the list.
Okay, I’ve written about 20 titles for this painting, but 19 of them sound like song titles from an Air Supply album. One stands out, to me anyway:
This is the Day…
Maybe because, approaching fifty, I’m increasingly thankful for each wonderful day in an impossibly beautiful world. Good luck choosing; you have alot of great titles to pick from.
Thanks, Paul- I like your title, I guess because I understand the sentiment behind it. It is an impossibly beautiful world…
I always see your giving us a privileged view of the underworld as kind of a memento mori, with a beauty and serenity in the repose as well as in the wakeful world above.
Wow. Thanks for those words, Paul. I really appreciate them…
I think Paul’s phrase is the perfect title – Memento Mori – it captures what I’ve been trying to come up with since the ‘contest’ started.
Hey!– I like “Memento Mori” as well. I may not be able to use it however as I used it a few years ago on a piece that hangs in my studio and is a piece that means a lot to me. Maybe “Layers: Memento Mori” ?
That sounds great. It addresses the piece visually while at the same time delving into the meaning and symbolism of the patterns therein.
“Laminae in Harmony”
I love the dual meaning of lamina with regards to the visual themes in this piece: in geology it is a layer of sediment or bed of rock, while in botany it is the surface of a leaf. The strata below so beautifully complement the individual blades of grass and leaves on the tree above.
Thank you for sharing this painting with us and giving us this opportunity to be a part of it! We look forward to seeing you again in Alexandria in June!
Thanks so much, Noah. Thanks for the explanation as well. I will be using lamina in future titles, to be sure. Look forward to seeing you in June…
“Memento Mori” feels very sad to me, after all it means “remember about( your )death.” It is translated to English very often as ”remember about (your) mortality”, which sounds much milder….
This tree is very vibrant , full of life, and full of anticipation. I propose another title “Memento Vitae” – “Remember about Life” or “Celebration of Life”. After all, there are layers of cake and there is a tree on the top of it.
Also I would like to take this chance to explain another title I proposed before – “Remembering” – the tree was a seed at some point, most likely one of the many seeds that struggled to germinate. Then it became a seedling, and had to struggle more to survive. After that it became a tree which could be more independent of the soil – thanks to its ability of utilizing carbon dioxide from the air above the soil. Finally, after all the struggle it became a beautiful, strong tree! It is the tree that remembers …. It remembers nurturing soil, the past struggles, it remembers where it came from.
After all that I said today, I would like to add, a few more proposal of the title:
MEMENTO VITAE. CELEBRATION. GREATFUL SON,
Happy 5 minutes before midnight! April 30, 2009
Friendly yours,
Alicja
Alicja– Thank you so much for the wonderful exposition of your titles. All are worthy. I particularly like “Memento Vitae” and if, in the next hour or so, it doesn’t win this little contest, will certainly end up in the vocabulary of my work. It is a lovely and optimistic counterpoint to Memento Mori. Again, many thanks…
